Kine Per week told you “The brand new robust ‘crooks fall out’ try peopled which have a colourful assortment of crucial and you may arresting emails, that, skilfully controlled by the blogger and you will director, allow the motion picture to tread liquids efficiently. It is merely into the become which actually starts to break apart, however the smack-upwards finale rescues they regarding ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you can wisely dialogued, it will have no high difficulties during the way of life off its incredibly unattractive name.” [ 8 ]

Month-to-month Flick Bulletin said “The film moves on an easy pace, the discussion try slick and you may characterisations generally energetic. Richard Brody throughout the The brand new Yorker detailed “Which terse and you can taut motion picture noir was predicated on this new personal and you may elite group disputes of name reputation, the criminal mastermind (played of the Knob Powell) behind a chic unlawful gambling establishment. The latest film’s publisher and you may director, Robert Rossen, sets up an effective multidimensional chess video game, to own mortal bet, ranging from Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Received), an excellent cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will an excellent scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sis (Nina Foch) worked at local casino and dated a beneficial corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic script, this new cast’s suavely controlled body language from love and you will risk, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and stylishly cocky pictures (along with his political conscience) get this pugnacious yet outlined spectacle an invisible antique of your own genre.” [ ten ]

As the patch pursue a familiar development, the characterizations was fresh while the activities sufficient so you can overbalance. Dialog try terse and you can topical, preventing the psychological, phoney touching. Unusual digital camera angles arrive occasionally to intensify appeal and momentarily arrest the interest. Good teamplay of the Robert Rossen, doubling because the movie director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, brand spanking new journalist and you may member producer, including helps with making this a flaccid creation.” [ eleven ]

Its generally a question of viewing Mr. Powell experience his paces smartly if you’re a large throw out of stars and you can performers offer him conventional service. Evelyn Keyes plays the favorable absolutely nothing woman which brings about the newest best in your and you will Ellen Received ‘s the easy and you can slinky vixen whom will get your to your jams. Thomas Gomez is actually fatty while the villain and you will Lee J. Cobb does a different in a position trip since the an exhausted police inspector which finally shuts the case. Significant amounts of sipping and you can smoking is performed because of the all the concerned.” [ several ]
